Kemptown Gasworks development refused by planning committee
Plans for the large-scale redevelopment of the former Kemptown Gasworks site near Black Rock and Brighton Marina have been refused by the planning committee following strong opposition from residents and community groups.
Kemptown councillor Gary Wilkinson welcomed the decision and issued the following statement.
Brighton Gasworks – KTS Submission to the Council
The Kemp Town Society has submitted a formal objection to the proposed redevelopment of the Brighton Gasworks site near Black Rock and Brighton Marina. The Society raises concerns about the scale of the scheme and its potential impact on the Grade I listed Kemp Town Estate, local infrastructure and the surrounding historic environment.
Marina Planning Decision
A major proposal for around 1,000 new flats at Brighton Marina, including a 28-storey tower, has been refused planning permission by the Government following advice from planning inspectors.

Fourteen local societies and community groups have submitted detailed questions to Dan Wickham at St. William Berkeley regarding the proposed redevelopment of the Brighton Gasworks site. Their concerns cover design, heritage impact, health and safety, housing, density, sustainability, and community consultation, reflecting widespread interest in ensuring the development respects both residents and the historic environment.

The City of Brighton and Hove Commemorates Antarctic Pioneer
Brighton & Hove will mark the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica with the unveiling of a Blue Plaque at 11 Clifton Road, the former home of naval explorer Edward Bransfield (1785–1852). The ceremony recognises Bransfield’s historic sighting of the Antarctic mainland in 1820, a discovery that helped launch the great age of Antarctic exploration. ❄️🌍
Drop in sessions to view Black Rock proposals
Plans to revitalise the long vacant Black Rock site are now taking shape, with the Council inviting residents to learn more and share their views. A series of drop-in sessions will be held locally, offering an opportunity to explore the proposals, ask questions, and find out how the project could shape the future of the area.

Petition to clean up Kemptown
A petition is currently running on the Brighton & Hove City Council website calling for urgent action to improve street cleanliness in Kemp Town. It highlights concerns including litter, overflowing bins, graffiti, dog fouling and inadequate recycling provision, and will be presented to the Environment, Transport & Sustainability Committee if it reaches enough signatures.
