In this centenary year of UK women first getting the Vote, there is a new scheme to honour the suffrage movement in Brighton. The Blue Plaque Panel chaired by Roger Amerena, a member of the Kemp Town Society, has approved four new blue plaques.
The locations in Brighton include North Street Quadrant where the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) had its headquarters and on the former homes of Minnie Turner, Elizabeth Robins, and Clementine Black.
The next blue plaque unveiling is for Minnie Turner at 13 Victoria Road, Brighton on Sunday 18 November 2018, at 1:30pm for 1:45pm.
Minnie Turner was born in 1866 in London, before moving to Brighton. A Liberal, she first became a member of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), then joining the more militant WSPU in 1908. Minnie ran ‘Seaview’ a boarding house in Victoria Road as a holiday destination and a refuge for suffragettes, with guests including Emmeline Pankhurst. Minnie passed away in 1948.
